Ireland’s Premier Technology Institute Gives Staff and Students Centrally Managed BYOD Access to Internal Applications and Data with Ericom Software
Ericom Connect Enables Roll Out of Fully-Redundant, Browser-Based BYOD Program in Just Two Days
Closter, N.J., (November 4, 2015) - Ericom Software, a global leader in application access and desktop virtualization solutions, today announced that the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB) Dublin, has implemented Ericom Connect to provide secure, 24/7 managed access to a shared network and cloud-based learning applications. The deployment of Ericom Connect supports more than 3500 staff and students using their own devices from any location.
ITB wanted to expand their web-based services so that students could enjoy access to shared network drives and learning applications from any device, on and off- campus. ITB partnered with IT service provider Loughtec to implement a simple, yet effective BYOD management strategy, suitable for today’s variety of devices and operating systems. Ericom Connect with its default browser-based access enabled students and staff to quickly get up and running without having to install any client-side software or plugins.
Ericom Connect was also able to resolve a long-standing issue for students wanting to print on campus. Previously, students would often have to wait in line to use one of the on-campus computers. Now they simply upload documents via their personal device and use the college Pay-for-Print application to print their material out on one of the on-campus printers.
“The wireless print experience is a great example of how Ericom Connect’s AccessNow HTML5 browser-based access has proven a very natural experience for end-users, ensuring a remarkably rapid take-up of services,” said Dave Curran, IT Manager, ITB. “Another great feature of Ericom Connect is its in-built reporting analytics which has significantly enhanced our license purchase and forecasting capability.”
“Our experience with ITB fully demonstrated the simplicity and versatility of the Ericom Connect access management platform,” said Cathal Green, Director at Loughtec. “From a technical perspective the whole system was in and fully operational within two days without end-users reporting any noticeable service interruptions - as far as we are concerned there can be no higher praise than that.” Green added, “In addition to expediting a comprehensive BYOD management strategy, Ericom Connect’s centralized management capabilities have also saved ITB money by allowing them to repurpose approximately 100 aging PCs with security and full IT systems redundancy.”
“With Ericom Connect, we’ve brought into ITB’s data center an easy to implement, fully operational managed access and BYOD solution, providing students and staff fully redundant managed access to the core applications and data they need to work and learn,” said Ilan Paretsky, Vice President of Marketing at Ericom. “At the same time IT support staff are able to enjoy full, round-the-clock visibility and control over what is being accessed, by whom, when and where from.”
Looking to the future, ITB is at the heart of plans to combine three Dublin based institutions into one Technological University. The flexibility and elasticity of Ericom Connect’s platform, which can easily scale to tens of thousands of users using a single system, is easily able to support the Institute’s future expansion plans.
Ericom Connect is available in two versions: Professional and Enterprise. In an industry first, the Enterprise version has the additional ability to simulate the end-user remote access process. IT support staff can tell at-a-glance why a particular user’s access failed which, in turn, can speed up troubleshooting.

The LINC also supports research activities taking place in ITB by providing technology transfer expertise and fostering an entrepreneurial culture on campus.
WORKING TO CREATE A TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY FOR DUBLIN
ITB is working with Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT Dublin) to jointly create a Technological University (TU) for Dublin, under new legislation currently going through the Houses of the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament).
Building on the established strengths and resources of the three institutions, the creation of a new TU for Dublin is an exciting opportunity for the Institute to offer the widest possible range of choices to students and to further enhance its contribution to society and to Ireland’s recovering economy. With campus locations in Dublin City, Blanchardstown and Tallaght, the Institute aims to play a significant role in the social and economic development of the Dublin region while continuing to serve the local communities.
