One-to-one computing (often abbreviated as "1:1") is an educational practice where academic institutions provide every student with a PC, laptop, tablet, or other electronic device, allowing students to access the World Wide Web, as well as preloaded course materials and textbooks. One-to-one computing aims to harness technology to create a classroom environment in which students have easy and equal access to information.
One-to-one computing has been explored and implemented sporadically since the late 1990s. Lately, it has gained new momentum due to recent technology developments and the proliferation of inexpensive devices, as well as changes in educational requirements. One-to-one computing is popular among K-12 schools and universities, where students purchase school-issued laptop with preloaded customized programs, lessons and textbooks.
One-to-one computing is often compared and contrasted with BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) which requires students to use their own electronic devices in educational settings. In contrast to BYOD policies, one-to-one computing assures equal access and allows for easier tool standardization and upgrades, and easier monitoring of students' progress.
Advantages of one-to-one computing:
Individualized Learning
In addition to providing Internet access, school-issued technological tools are loaded with programs and course materials customized by the school. The portability of the devices gives students access to school-designed resources anytime and anywhere, allowing students to learn at their own pace.
Enhanced Student Engagement
Studies suggest that collaboration using laptops and hand-held devices improves students' interpersonal and teamwork skills. Further research also found that as teachers' and students' laptop usage increases, the student engagement and interest levels skyrocket.
Improved Student and Method Monitoring
One-to-one technology allows teachers to observe student progress and online behavior with more ease. Indeed, research suggests that teachers are able to better monitor student comprehension and skill-application in one-to-one environments. Additionally, institutions can utilize the technology to monitor the effectiveness of current educational methods.

Increased Career-Readiness
One-to-one computing immerses students in technology and contributes to technological fluency and competence, equipping students well for their future work.
